Do You Know Where Your Subconscious Was Last Night?

Where do dreams come from? Lately, I have been thinking about this a lot as images and people from past appear in my dreamscape as filtered through a funhouse mirror.

Author James Lee Burke’s troubled Louisiana bait shop owner/recovered alcoholic/Vietnam vet/solver of mysteries Dave Robicheaux has vivid, almost hallucinatory dreams and a key to the method behind his madness may be found in this quote from Mr. Burke’s 1995 novel Burning Angel.

“Milton and Shakespeare both said lucidity and power lay in the world of dreams. For me, that has always meant that sleep and the unconscious can define what daylight and rationality cannot.”
