“When in the hell is anybody going to listen to ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’? We ain’t going on the road with the Globetrotters!”
BETTYE LaVETTE tells Katherine Turman in THE VILLAGE VOICE “Sound of the City” blog why she opted to cover modern songwriters rather than sing blues standards.
Ms. LaVette’s new album on ANTI- called Thankful N’ Thoughtful features her own distinctive versions of songs written and recorded by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Patty Griffin and the Gnarls Barkley gang, among others. (My favorite: Bettye’s cover of Dylan’s “Everything Is Broken”)
