All Time Favorite LPs: THE TRUMPET KINGS MEET JOE TURNER (Pablo)

Jazz and blues may not have the same mom and dad but they are definitely kissin’ cousins and nowhere is that more true than on this classic slice on vinyl from 1974.

Big Joe Turner, one of the great blues shouters, hooks up with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Roy Eldridge and Harry “Sweets” Edison (who autographed my copy of the album) to cook up a hot, spicy and supremely tasty musical barbeque.

Together these guys chow down on a lip smackin’ menu of Turner originals “Mornin’, Noon & Night”, “I Know You Love Me Baby” and “TV Mamma” (y’know, ” the one with a wide, wide screen”) and an old standard,  “Tain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do”, with undisguised relish.

Pass the cornbread, please!
